  • Day 1 – Traverse City State Park

    June 2nd, 2023

After an exhaustive and exhausting preparation period that has taken us almost a year (more about that later), we are finally on the road to our grand adventure. Using the RV trip wizard, I painstakingly mapped out a route that takes us to many of the National Parks in the lower 48 U.S. states. Our first stop was Traverse City state park, with its prime location on Lake Michigan.

After a 3-1/2 hour drive we arrived on time for check-in to find that our site has no water hookup, so after several times around the loop we were able to fill our water tank. Apparently filling it from the passenger side was lots faster.

Site 52 is a nice one, with lots of trees for my hammock and in easy access to the Tart Trail, a paved trail perfect for biking. As many times as I stayed at Cherry Tree Inn in TC, I had no idea there was suck a nice trail so close. We took advantage the trail to bike to Tom’s grocery store with our reluctant biker, Olive.

It’s really cool that Traverse City State Park is on both sides of US31 – there is a walkway from the campground above the highway to the beach on the other side. Today we saw the best sunset on Traverse Bay from the state park beach.
